Festivals and Markets
Being invited to Heilbronn often means visiting one of the city's many festivals and markets. All through the year, they accentuate the life of the city and its inhabitants.
Hardly anybody should miss out on an event that is richly steeped in tradition – the Heilbronn Horse Market with its market stalls and kiosks, held at the end of February right smack in the middle of town.
Each May, the Heilbronn Trollinger Marathon attracts thousands of longdistance runners. The course - from Heilbronn to the Zabergäu region and back again - takes them through the environs of Heilbronn, whose scenery is dominated by gorgeous vineyards.
As does Munich, so does Heilbronn have its Theresienwiese festival ground. The 30,000 sqm fairground is the venue for the ten-day long Heilbronn fun fair, held at the beginning of August and including a big fun fair and live music at the marquee. In summer the Heilbronner Neckarfest lures the visitors to the idyllic Neckarbank in the middle of the Heilbronn city centre.
The largest and most popular wine festival is the Heilbronn Weindorf or Wine Village. During ten days in September, more than 300 elegant wines and refreshing champagnes are served at lavishly decorated stands.
The fine art of pottery created by more than 50 artists from all over Germany and parts of Europe may be admired during the Pottery Market held at the beginning of October.
During yuletide it is the aroma of aniseed, vanilla and cinnamon that permeates the market square. The goods sold from the wooden cabins with their festive decoration and their impressive location between the city hall, St Kilian's Church and Pottery Market Tower fall mostly into the category of arts and crafts gifts. The mulled wine sold here is made from Heilbronn vintage wine – just as much a mark of the Heilbronn Christmas Market as the many rides for children and the two lavishly decorated Christmas trees on the market square and St Kilian's Square.
